Professional bachelor degree on campus Sint-Lucas Ghent
In the Visual Communication degree course, you can choose one of the following studios: Graphics, Advertising, Digital or Still. In each studio, you will learn to seek creative solutions to real problems through project-based work. By integrating concrete projects and internships, you will form a close relationship with the field of work. This broad training combined with thorough expert knowledge prepares you to work independently, proactively and flexibly later on.
More than creativity alone
Successfully realising creative assignments calls for more than a creative mind. Oral and written communications skills are essential and not only important during your projects but also during courses such as Publishing, your internship and final bachelor project. You will develop an eye for target group analysis, client service, budget and timing. Additionally, during creative assignments, you will learn to work purposefully and in a team. In the Drawing course, you will be trained to quickly visualise an idea. In the Digital Methodology course, you will receive a strong grounding in everything digital. In this way, you will be ready to launch your career after your degree.
Projects: a bridge to reality
To prepare our students for reality, we consistently involve the professional world in our curriculum, invite interesting speakers and organise workshops. In addition, our students regularly work on real projects in the studio. In order to strengthen this link and to prepare students to work proactively and independently, we have introduced the ‘Project’ course. Students can obtain credits and gain practical work experience by realising one or more projects: they can participate in competitions, research projects or interdisciplinary projects with other education institutions, both nationally and internationally.
In recent years, we have built a solid reputation on the competition circuit. Our students don’t go unnoticed at StuMPA, the Magazine Print Award for students, the Clash of the Talents of Design against Fur and the Michel Leën Award. At international level, we participate in Mind the Gap, a multidisciplinary education project around prototyping for the web, Praxis, Mutw …
About the curriculum
The professional bachelor in Visual Communication covers visual communication from A to Z. In each of our four studios – Graphics, Advertising, Digital and Still – you will learn to seek creative solutions to real problems through project-based work. Practical courses such as Drawing and Digital Methodologies and theory courses such as Art, Economics and Communication provide the necessary breadth of learning and preparation for your future career.
- Communication / text and image / typography / briefing / logo / brochure / poster / corporate identity / knowledge of materials
In the Graphics Studio you will explore contemporary graphic, typographic and visual language. Based on a concrete briefing and thorough research, you will create a surprising concept. The design process is supported by your critical analysis of the form and content of the design. This results in an authentic work with a striking visual language, tailored to the client and communicatively attractive for the target group.
- Concept / brainstorm / deadline / briefing / commercial spot / billboard / rough / media / topical viral marketing / guerrilla marketing
The Advertising Studio is a real challenge. You must be able to convince the right target group with compelling advertising campaigns. This requires creativity in word and image. You will learn how to generate strong ideas through brainstorming techniques. Independent of media or channels, you will design and develop innovative and surprising concepts. Your ideas can be used in print, commercial spots, online or offline. In addition, you will visit leading agencies and be taught by guest tutors who will share their experience or give copywriting workshops. Together with your fellow students, you will also participate in national and international competitions where your predecessors have already won prizes.
- Drawing / briefing / character design / storyboarding / roughing designer toys / infographics / illustration
In the Still Studio you will develop your drawing talents in order to skilfully visualise and communicate information. We will grow your drawing and roughing skills and familiarise you with anatomy, proportions, perspective and composition. You will make professional illustrations and pre-visualisations and you will design logos and brand characters for the graphics and advertising sector. With us, you will discover new domains such as concept art in comic strips, animation and gaming. Last but not least, you will learn how to make visual representations of complex information flows and concretely apply the principles of a good storyboard.
- Motion graphics / interface design / navigation / online social media / mobile design / app / also for girls / CSS animation / video / sound
